Saddle Fitting Course

Dear Prospective Student,

Thank you very much for enquiring about the Saddle Fitting Course.

This course is presented by Deanne Archibald (SMS Saddle Fitter). The Saddle Fitting Course is essentially done through correspondence with the compulsory attendance

of a three-day seminar. Most of the students who enrol for this course work full-time and the course is therefore designed to be done on a part-time basis.  Being a private company Ethology Academy is very flexible. As long as students communicate with us we are usually able to accommodate them in various ways should personal circumstances develop in the duration of the course, making it difficult for them to continue with their studies and complete the course successfully.

The content of the Saddle Fitting Course is as follows:
•    The Structure of the Horse’s back
•    Conformation and Condition
•    Movement of the Horse
•    The Saddle
•    Fitting the Saddle
•    Problems Related to the Fit of the Saddle

How the course is presented
After enrolling, the student receives all the study material via registered mail. Included will be a “Student Letter” giving detailed information on every aspect of the course. Also included will be two assignments. Students will receive an electronic copy of the assignments that can be used if the student elects to submit the assignments via email. Alternatively assignments can be posted using the Post Office service. Study material will only be sent once payment has been received. Students may register any time before the closing date for a particular seminar but will only receive study material 2 months prior to the seminar.

Evaluation

The student will be expected to submit 2 assignments during the two months period preceding the compulsory seminar. The assignments will be marked and returned to the students. The marks obtained for the 2 assignments will give the student entrance to write the final examination and practical on the third day of the seminar. The assignments are not difficult, because all the answers are in the notes. It should not take more than 2 – 3 hours to complete an assignment. A minimum mark of 75 % will be required to pass each assignment. Assignments may be resubmitted should the student not be successful in obtaining a minimum of 75%.

Seminars
A compulsory three-day seminar marks the end of this course. Students will need two months to read through the theory and complete the 2 assignments. The seminar is a practical application of the theory provided in the notes. The third day of the seminar is a practical evaluation. A written exam will be done on the second day of the seminar. On successful completion of this course, the student will receive a certificate, and be equipped to correctly fit a saddle. There will need to be a minimum of three students per seminar and a maximum of six. Should fewer than 3 students register for the seminar you have chosen, it will be postponed until the next seminar date.

Students will be required to obtain a minimum of 75% in the written exam and 75% in the practical exam in order to pass this course. Should the student not be successful in obtaining these marks, he or she will be able to rewrite the exam and/or redo the practical assessment at the next seminar. An additional fee will be charged for this.
These seminars will be held in benoni. Other venues will be considered depending on number of students in various areas. The attendance fee for the seminars is included in the course fee, but students are responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenditures.

Final evaluation:
The final practical evaluation is on the third day of the seminar. You will only be required to attend your practical evaluation on the third day. Students from out of town will be accommodated s early as possible. The written exam will take place on day two of the seminar. Pass mark for each evaluation is 75%. Distinctions will be awarded to those students obtaining 90 % or more.

The course is presented from February to November each year, with seminars roughly every second month.  Study material will only be posted once proof of payment has been received. The course fee for the Saddle Fitting Course for 2019 is R 4 000. The fee includes the study material, assignments, attendance of the seminar and the evaluation fee.  Travel to and accommodation at the seminar is not included in the course fee.
